Introduction to the Sheffield Hallam University

One of Britain's first three polytechnics, formed in 1969 from two colleges of art and technology, Sheffield Hallam won its university status in 1992. Like Sheffield University, Hallam is a large establishment with over 20,000 students. Some 45,000 students study at Sheffield's universities, contributing to the city's regeneration and feeding its great social scene.

Hallam deliberated about moving its main site from the city centre, but decided to stay and take part in bringing life back to Sheffield's heart, which has been badly affected by the Meadowhall shopping centre further up the M1.

In recent years, Hallam has spent over £50m to enable it to take in more students and provide better facilities. Engineering and information technology have new buildings; the Adsetts Centre is a state of the art library; and the Sheffield Business School - which houses Hallam's biggest department - has its own city centre site.
