Introduction to the Aston University

Aston University first saw the light of day as Birmingham Municipal Technical College in the 1890s. It achieved university status in 1966 and has developed ever since.

Although its strengths lie in technological courses, it has been building both its languages and its business schools, and prides itself on the employability of its graduates, 70% of whom have done work placements as part of their study.

A student from Aston University may have helped end the archaic system of "visitors" under which a student wishing to appeal a decision by the authorities could only appeal to the visitor, rather than an independent adjudicator. The Queen and Lady Mary Archer, wife of the disgraced Tory peer, are both visitors.

Birmingham itself is riding high at the moment. The students' guild reckon that the nightlife is superb, and there are thought to be 100 pubs within one mile of Aston's green 40-acre campus. Whether or not you agree that it's the heart of England, it's certainly Balti heaven and the home of Miss Moneypenny's as well as a vibrant mod scene. Birmingham requires you to live, not just read about life.

Accommodation here is relatively inexpensive - all first years and most final years are guaranteed accommodation on the campus - and the transport links are great: it's about 15 minutes on foot from Birmingham New Street station and only two miles from the M6.
